He surprised us all with his flawless performance as Aslam in the blockbuster of 2006, “Rang De Basanti” and all who saw him said that Kunal had finally arrived in Bollywood to leave a mark forever.
Son of the veteran Shashi Kapoor and the late Jennifer Kendal, Kunal has two siblings: brother Karan Kapoor and sister Sanjana Kapoor. His wife is the daughter of Ramesh Sippy. They have two children Zahaan and Shaira.
Kunal’s tryst with cinema began as an assistant director to Rakesh Mehra in Aks. But gradually, he realized that acting was what he wanted to do and not direction. So he made a very unconventional debut in 2003, with the film “Meenaxi: a tale of three cities”. The film did not do well at the box office.
The next step for Kunal was doing “Rang De Basanti”. This film had a starcast of hugely popular actors like Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Soha Ali Khan. But Kunal’s performance was outstanding. He was critically appreciated and reached stardom almost overnight.
He also starred in “Hattrick” a movie based on cricket and how the game affects the lives of five individuals.
Kunal has been associated with Mumbai’s Prithvi theatre and has also done a course in Namit Kishore Academy.
Though it has been more than 4 years, Kunal is in no hurry. He likes to work at his own pace and doesn’t feel frustrated about getting no work.
Another facet to this talented 6’2” tall actor is his knack for writing. He loves to jot down his daily experiences in his diary. These days he has been writing a script. It is a romantic comedy and might get a green signal by the end of the year!
With Kunal doing more and more films, his fan following is surely on the increase. Soon Kunal will get into the “A” level actors if he chooses his films wisely and works even hard.
